The nitty gritty
Vietnam eSIM FAQs
The best Vietnam travel eSIM depends on how you're travelling, but ZenSim's plans are built for tourists, business travellers and digital nomads alike, rather than one generic plan trying to suit everyone. Install takes just a couple of minutes via QR code or one-tap through the ZenSim app, and your eSIM Vietnam plan auto-activates the moment you land.
For most travellers, yes. An eSIM for Vietnam skips the airport SIM counter entirely, since you can install it before you fly and it'll be sitting ready and waiting on arrival. There's no physical card to fit, lose or swap back out at the end of your trip, and your home number stays active on its own SIM the whole time thanks to dual SIM support.
Coverage in Vietnam's more remote northern regions, including Sapa and the Ha Giang Loop, is generally solid along the main routes and towns, though as with any network anywhere in the world, mountainous terrain and very rural stretches can occasionally see patchier signal. For the vast majority of travel through Vietnam, including popular trekking and motorbike routes, you can expect reliable mobile data.
Usually yes but of course it varies on which plan, which airport etc. However, buying a Vietnam travel eSIM in advance often works out more affordable especially once you factor in the time and hassle of finding a local SIM counter after landing. Not to mention you can check reviews online and compare pricing against top providers. Sorting your eSIM online before you fly also means no queuing, no language barrier at the counter, and no risk of the shop being out of stock or overcharging a tired traveller fresh off a long flight.
Yes, our Vietnam travel eSIM includes an unlimited data option for 5, 15 or 30 days. Unlimited plans come with 3GB per day of high-speed data, which covers the vast majority of travellers without any issue. If you do go over that in a single day, your speed drops to 1Mbps rather than cutting out completely, so you're not left offline, just running slower until it resets at midnight. Need more time? You can easily extend or top up your Vietnam eSIM through the ZenSim app.
Our Vietnam travel eSIMs are purely data - no native voice or SMS services are included. If you need calling, use an internet - based app like WhatsApp or Messenger over your data connection.
Absolutely! You can install your Vietnam travel eSIM up to 30 days before departure. Installing early means it will automatically activate once you land.
Rest assured, installing before you leave won’t start your data or count down your plan days until you arrive in Vietnam.
If you see an activation error on iPhone when installing before arriving, you can ignore it-learn more in our eSIM Troubleshooting Guide.
No, the Vietnam eSIM is data-only and excludes voice/SMS numbers. You’ll have to rely on data-based messaging platforms like WhatsApp or Messenger for calling.
Your eSIM will activate automatically when you arrive in Vietnam. Though we recommend installing your Vietnam Travel eSIM before you arrive (this is different to activating).
To do this, scan the QR code we provide or install the eSIM directly from the ZenSim app while connected to WiFi. Once you arrive in Vietnam, your eSIM will activate automatically.
If you encounter any issues check out our eSIM Troubleshooting Guide or contact us directly ☺️
If installed before your trip, it will activate when you land in Vietnam.
If installed after arrival, it goes live right away.
Having issues? Check our eSIM Troubleshooting Guide or contact us for assistance.
If you want to avoid roaming headaches in Vietnam, a travel eSIM is the smarter pick:
Big Savings: Our local Vietnam eSIM data plans are priced for residents, not tourists who pay premium roaming costs.
Easy Plan Changes: Upgrade or downgrade your data allowance on the fly - no need for a new SIM.
Full Transparency: See your data usage in - app so you won’t run out unexpectedly or incur extra charges.
Not until you land in Vietnam. Installing ahead won’t start your plan; it goes live automatically when you arrive.
Make sure to install before you travel, as WiFi is required for setup and this way your Vietnam eSIM will be ready to use when you land.
If you encounter connection issues, see our eSIM Troubleshooting Guide or contact support.
Definitely! ZenSim supports eSIM usage in over 200 countries, so Vietnam is covered. If you need multi-country coverage, take a look at our regional eSIM options on the Travel eSIMs page.
Connection Problems: If your Vietnam eSIM isn’t loading data, check our troubleshooting post. If that doesn’t do it, contact us and we’ll get you fixed up.
Installation Questions: Need help installing your eSIM? Visit our how-to guide, or shoot us a message at Contact Us and we’ll sort it out.
Anything Else: Got other queries? Visit our contact page and we’ll be right with you.
Most ZenSim eSIMs can be topped up directly inside the app. If you ever need extra data, additional days, or want to include a new destination on the same eSIM, the Zen Garden is where you can do it.
Simply log in, tap into the Zen Garden, and you’ll find the option to top up right there.
Available top ups: For Vietnam, the top up plans are identical to the ones on the site, but you get a 10% discount.
Extending your stay: Planning to be away longer than 30 days? You can buy multiple top ups ahead of time. They activate one after another, so there’s no risk of replacing your current plan.
More than one country: Many eSIMs now let you attach extra countries through a top up. For example, while using a Europe eSIM you can add Singapore as an extra destination. It will activate automatically when you land in Singapore.
Single-country eSIMs like the Vietnam one are only valid within that country once activated.
For travel across borders, a regional plan might suit you better - our regional Travel eSIMs cover multiple countries in one.
Absolutely you can. After purchasing your Vietnam eSIM, share your unique referral URL with whoever you like and if they purchase you both save A$5 on your next purchases.
After purchase you can access your URL on the checkout confirmation screen or in the ZenSim app. For each new customer you refer to us you will be given a A$5 voucher to use on your next purchase.
Track your referral activity and access your unique referral link inside the ZenSim app. View the terms to learn more.
It might, but only if you're on an unlimited plan and only after you pass 3GB in a single day - which is well above what most people actually use (under 1GB a day on average).
Once you hit that 3GB mark, your speed drops to 1Mbps until midnight, then resets back to full speed for the new day.
If you're on a fixed-data plan like 10GB or 20GB, none of this applies - there's no daily limit, just use your data as needed until the plan runs out. We'll notify you beforehand, and you can top up right away in the ZenSim app.
It won't activate the moment you buy it - your Vietnam eSIM won't touch your data or days until you actually arrive, so there's no downside to installing it in advance.
As long as it's installed beforehand, it'll activate itself the second you touch down, and that's the moment your plan officially begins.
As for running out - your eSIM expires once your data or days are gone, whichever comes first (just the days, if you're on unlimited). Buy a 30-day plan and it'll run out 30 days after arrival in Vietnam, not 30 days after purchase.
Easy way to check - just run your phone through our eSIM compatibility checker and you'll know in seconds whether it'll work with our Vietnam eSIM and networks.
Still not sure, or something looks off? Reach out to us and we'll sort it out. And if it turns out your phone genuinely can't run the eSIM, our refund policy has you covered with a full refund - so there's no risk in grabbing a plan and giving it a go.
We sure do - it's covered under our 100% money back guarantee.
Cancelled trip, incompatible phone, or your travel plans just changing - all of these situations qualify.
Check out our refund policy for the full details, but the bottom line is: if you can't install or use the eSIM, you'll get every cent back.

eSIM Vietnam: Connected Your Way, On Your Timeline
A Vietnam travel eSIM for tourists, business travellers and digital nomads
ZenSim provides affordable Vietnam travel eSIM plans built around how different people actually travel, not a single plan stretched to fit everyone. Whether you're backpacking between cities for a few weeks, in Ho Chi Minh City for meetings, or working remotely from a cafe in Hoi An for a month, there's a plan sized to match your trip through Vietnam.
Instant QR code or one-tap install, auto-activated on arrival
Your eSIM Vietnam plan installs digitally in a couple of minutes, either by scanning the QR code we email you or skipping the second device entirely with a one-tap install through the ZenSim app. No physical SIM card required at any point. Install it before you fly while you're still on home WiFi, and it auto-activates the moment you land, so you're connected to mobile data in Vietnam as a separate line alongside your existing SIM, without hunting down a local SIM counter after a long flight.
Keep your home number active with dual SIM support
Your eSIM for Vietnam runs as a separate data-only line alongside your existing SIM, thanks to dual SIM support built into most recent iPhone and Android devices. That means you keep your home number active for calls and texts exactly as normal, while your new eSIM quietly handles mobile data in Vietnam in the background.
No roaming fees, from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay
International roaming charges have a habit of turning a great trip into an expensive one fast, especially over a longer stay in Vietnam. A Vietnam travel eSIM means no roaming fees at all, with an affordable prepaid plan sorted before you even leave, so there's nothing unexpected waiting on your next phone bill once you're home.
Reliable coverage across Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang and Hoi An
Vietnam is a long, narrow country, and your eSIM needs to keep up as you move between very different regions of it. Your ZenSim eSIM covers mobile data in Vietnam across Hanoi's Old Quarter, the busy streets of Ho Chi Minh City, the beaches of Da Nang, the lantern-lit lanes of Hoi An, and the waters of Ha Long Bay, so you're connected wherever your route takes you.
Unlimited data plans available for Vietnam, from 1GB to unlimited
Not every trip to Vietnam needs the same amount of data, so ZenSim's plans range from 1GB right up to unlimited, across 5, 15 or 30 day options. Pick something sized for a short city break or a longer journey down the coast, and if you end up needing more, topping up is just a couple of taps away in the ZenSim app. Comparing your options first? Top 3 Things to Do in Vietnam
1. Cruise Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay is the image most people picture when they think of Vietnam's coastline, and seeing it in person rarely disappoints. Thousands of limestone karsts and small islands rise straight out of emerald water across the bay, many topped with tangled jungle vegetation, having formed over millions of years of erosion. A boat cruise is by far the best way to take it in, gliding slowly between towering rock formations that seem to shift shape as the light changes throughout the day.
Most cruises include a stop at one of the bay's cave systems, with Sung Sot Cave, known as the Surprise Cave, among the most impressive thanks to its cavernous chambers and dramatic stalactites. Kayaking is another popular way to explore, letting you paddle right up to the base of the karsts and into narrow gaps between islands that larger boats can't reach, along with the chance to drift past one of the bay's floating fishing villages, where entire communities live on the water.
An overnight cruise is worth the extra time if your schedule allows it, since it lets you experience the bay at both sunrise and sunset, when the limestone cliffs take on a soft golden glow and the water turns glassy calm. For a similar landscape with noticeably fewer boats, nearby Lan Ha Bay is a popular alternative that still delivers the same dramatic scenery with a bit more breathing room.
2. Wander the Ancient Town of Hoi An

Hoi An's Ancient Town is one of the best-preserved trading ports in Southeast Asia, and its streets still carry the layered influence of the Chinese, Japanese and European merchants who once passed through. Yellow-walled shophouses, ornate Chinese assembly halls and the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge line narrow pedestrian streets that are largely closed to traffic, making it an easy place to wander without much of a plan.
The town is famous for its lanterns, and after dark the streets and the Thu Bon River transform as thousands of colourful silk lanterns are lit up, with vendors selling small floating candles to release onto the water for good luck. It's especially striking during the monthly Lantern Festival, held on the 14th day of the lunar calendar, when the town switches off electric lighting entirely and runs on lantern light alone for the evening.
Hoi An is also well known as a tailoring hub, with hundreds of shops able to make custom clothing, often ready within 24 hours. Just outside the old town, An Bang Beach offers a relaxed stretch of coastline for slowing down after a day of sightseeing, and the surrounding countryside is dotted with rice paddies that are easily explored by bicycle, one of the more peaceful ways to see everyday rural life around the town.
3. Ride the Ha Giang Loop

The Ha Giang Loop is one of Vietnam's most spectacular road trips, winding through the country's far northern mountains near the Chinese border on a multi-day motorbike route past terraced rice fields, limestone peaks and small ethnic minority villages. Most riders tackle it over three to four days, either self-driving or riding pillion with a local guide, known as an easy rider, who handles the navigation and mechanical side of things.
The Ma Pi Leng Pass is the route's most famous stretch, a narrow road carved into the mountainside with sheer drops down to the Nho Que River below, and it's regularly ranked among the most scenic drives in all of Southeast Asia. Along the way, the route passes through Dong Van's old quarter, home to a well-preserved night market and a striking Hmong King's Palace, along with countless roadside stops where locals sell honey, corn wine and other regional specialties.
The loop is demanding, with long riding days and mountain roads that require a reasonable level of confidence on two wheels, but it's also one of the most rewarding ways to see a side of Vietnam that few travellers venture far enough north to experience. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable riding conditions, avoiding both the summer rains and the coldest winter mountain temperatures.
